Some signs are loud. A breaker that trips every week, a panel that hums or buzzes, a burning smell near the box, or scorch marks around a breaker. Any of those means stop and call an electrician the same day.

Others are quiet and easy to live with for years. Lights that dim when a big appliance starts. Warm outlets. Rust on the panel door or the bottom of the cabinet. A fuse box instead of breakers. Two wires jammed under one breaker screw, which is called double tapping. A panel with no empty slots left. Two prong outlets with no ground anywhere in the house.

What these signs mean is that the panel is carrying more than it was built to carry, or that a connection inside has gone loose and is heating up. Loose connections arc. Arcing burns the bus bar. Once the bus bar is damaged, the panel is done and no breaker swap will save it.

Waiting costs money. A failing breaker caught early is a small job. The same problem left alone can take out the panel, the meter pan, and the service cable, which turns a modest repair into a full service replacement with Con Edison scheduling attached.

Repair makes sense when one breaker is bad and the rest of the panel is clean and modern. Replacement makes sense when the panel is rusted, recalled, full, or still running on fuses, or when the house needs more amps than the service can deliver.

Every job starts the same way. We open the panel, check what size service is coming into the house, look at the condition of the bus bar and the terminations, and run a load calculation on what the house actually uses. Electric Panel Installation is for homes getting a proper panel for the first time in that location, or for new construction, additions, and garage conversions that need their own distribution point. Electric Panel Replacement is the most common job we do. It swaps a failing, rusted, full, or recalled panel for a modern one at the same service size, which is the right call when the incoming power is adequate but the box itself is not safe.

100 & 200 Amp Service Upgrades are a bigger job, because they change how much power the utility delivers to the house. That means a new meter pan, new service entrance cable, a new grounding system, and coordination with Con Edison to cut power and reconnect. This is what you need when central air, an electric or induction range, and an EV charger all have to run at once.

Electric Subpanel Installation adds circuits for a finished basement, a detached garage, or an addition without replacing the main panel. If the main service has capacity left, a subpanel is usually the cheaper and faster path.

Circuit Breaker Replacement is the smallest fix on this list. When one breaker trips constantly, feels warm, or will not reset, and the rest of the panel is in good shape, that single breaker is the whole job.

Fuse Box Replacement trades an old fuse box for a modern breaker panel. Fuses still work, but insurers are increasingly unwilling to write policies on them, and a fuse box gives you no arc fault or ground fault protection at all.

Staten Island gives us three distinct panel problems depending on where the house sits.

On the East and South Shores through New Dorp, Great Kills, Annadale, and Tottenville, we still find Hurricane Sandy damage more than a decade later. Panels that sat in salt water look fine from the front and corrode from the inside. The rust starts at the bottom of the cabinet and works up the bus bar, and by the time a breaker starts misbehaving the damage is well established. If your basement took water in 2012 and the panel was never replaced, it is worth opening.

Through the middle of the island in Westerleigh, New Springville, and Todt Hill, the 1960s and 70s housing stock is mostly still on its original 100 amp service, and some of it on 60. Those houses were built before central air, before microwaves, and long before anyone charged a car in the driveway. Add all three and the math does not work, which is why most of our 200 amp upgrades happen in this band.

Up on the North Shore in St. George and Stapleton, the pre-war homes often have knob and tube or cloth covered wiring still live behind the plaster. Replacing the panel there without looking at what feeds out of it just puts a new box in front of old problems.
